Under The Oak Tree

Ponieważ w te zimowe, tutaj ciężkie od szarości dni, potrzebuję raz jeszcze trzymać się jasności, przychodzę z opowieścią o przyjemności, jaką jest spędzanie letnich, słonecznych chwil w zwiewnym, prześwietlonym zielonością cieniu drzew.

W jednej z moich ostatnich lektur, "Księga gaju laurowego i inne eseje" Béli Hamvasa, autor swój pierwszy esej zaczyna właśnie od tego — od opowieści o gaju laurowym, który wprawił go w zachwyt, zapachem uspokoił jego ducha i zainspirował do napisania książki, która nadawałaby się do niespiesznego spędzania czasu.

Jest to jeden z piękniejszych esejów, jakie czytałam, i sprawił mi szczególną przyjemność w tę zimową porę. Przyniósł także wspomnienie lata i wakacji spędzanych w Walii, w Bieszczadach, w kaszubskich lasach. Przypomniał, że odpoczywanie w cieniu drzew jest przecież ulubionym zajęciem Piotra — który jest cały naturą, który oddycha ogrodem i okolicznymi polami, który wyszukuje drzew i sadzi nam las pod domem.

Pomyślałam zatem, że przyszedł czas, aby zapamiętać go takim w mojej grafice, którą dzielę się dzisiaj na stronach between wor(l)ds. Po narysowaniu tej grafiki zatęskniłam też za podróżowaniem. Może to dobry czas na planowanie wakacji?

Na razie podróżuję z esejami Adama Wodnickiego po Prowansji, z książką "Tryptyk oksytański. Obrazki z Arles i okolic. Obrazki z krainy d'Oc Arelate. Obrazki z niemiejsca."  

Niezwykle świetlista to literatura, pełna ciekawych ludzi, pięknych krajobrazow, intensywnych zapachow, historii, które wydarzyły się naprawdę, i opowieści na granicy rzeczywistości, tęsknoty i melancholii.

Bardzo, bardzo polecam tę lekturę do niespiesznego czytania — jej autor, zapewne tak jak Béla Hamvas, odpoczywał nieraz w cieniu laurowych drzew czego także i wam życze.

To tyle na dzisiaj.

Under The Oak Tree

Because in these winter days here, heavy with greyness, I need once more to hold on to light, I come with a story about a simple pleasure: spending summer, sun-filled moments in the airy shade of trees, translucent with green.

In one of my recent readings, The Book of the Laurel Grove and Other Essays by Béla Hamvas, the author begins his very first essay precisely there — with the story of a laurel grove that filled him with wonder, soothed his spirit with its scent, and inspired him to write a book meant for unhurried time.

It is one of the most beautiful essays I have read, and it brought me particular pleasure in this winter season. It also carried with it memories of summer and holidays spent in Wales, in the Bieszczady Mountains, in the forests of Kashubia. It reminded me that resting in the shade of trees is, after all, Piotr's favourite occupation — Piotr, who is nature through and through, who breathes with the garden and the surrounding fields, who seeks out trees and plants a forest  beneath our home.

I thought, then, that the time had come to remember him like this in my graphic work, which I am sharing today on the pages of between wor(l)ds. After finishing the drawing, I found myself longing for travel as well. Perhaps this is a good moment to begin planning a holiday?

For now, I am travelling through Provence with the essays of Adam Wodnicki, with the book Occitan Triptych. Images from Arles and Its Surroundings. Images from the Land of d'Oc Arelate. Images from a Non-Place. It is extraordinarily luminous literature, full of intriguing people, beautiful landscapes, intense scents, stories that truly happened, and tales poised on the boundary between reality, longing, and melancholy.

This is a grat book for slow reading — its author, like Béla Hamvas, surely rested many times in the shade of laurel trees, which is something I wish for you as well.
